The Indian Institute of Technology Patna (IIT Patna or IITP) is one of India's eight new-generation IITs, established on 6 August 2008 by an Act of the Indian Parliament under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education), Government of India. Strategically located in Bihta, Patna, Bihar, approximately 35 km from Patna city along the National Highway NH-30, IITP is the first and only IIT in the state of Bihar — making it the premier destination for engineering aspirants across eastern India, including students from Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and neighbouring states.

Initially operating from a temporary 10-acre campus in Patliputra Colony, Patna, the institute transitioned to its sprawling 501-acre permanent campus in Bihta in July 2015. The campus sits along the fertile Gangetic plains and features state-of-the-art academic complexes, dedicated research laboratories, separate hostels for boys and girls, a fully automated central library, sports facilities, and medical amenities. IIT Patna is declared an Institute of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, and is approved by both AICTE and UGC.
