Quick answer: is NIRF Ranking 2026 out?
Not yet. As of 10 October 2026, the Ministry of Education has not published the NIRF (India Rankings) 2026 results. The newest official list is NIRF 2025, released on 4 September 2025, in which IIT Madras ranked No. 1 overall for the seventh year in a row and No. 1 in engineering for the tenth year in a row. IISc Bengaluru was second overall and first among universities, IIM Ahmedabad led management, AIIMS New Delhi led medical, NLSIU Bengaluru led law and Jamia Hamdard led pharmacy.
This page shows verified NIRF 2025 data, explains how the framework works, adds QS World University Rankings 2027 positions for Indian institutions, and gives a step-by-step method for turning a rank into a sensible admission decision. When the official 2026 tables appear, they will replace the 2025 tables below.
NIRF 2026 release status: what we know on 10 October 2026
The National Institutional Ranking Framework publishes its India Rankings once a year. For the 2026 cycle the data-capturing window on the official portal opened on 6 January 2026 and closed on 16 March 2026. After that, the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) carries out verification, and the Ministry of Education announces the results at an event, usually with the Union Education Minister. At the time of writing, no 2026 results have been announced and no official date has been confirmed.
Release timing has drifted later in recent years. The 2023 rankings came out in June, the 2024 rankings on 12 August, and the 2025 rankings on 4 September. Education portals are now pointing to October 2026 for the next release, but these are estimates, not announcements. The only reliable confirmation is the Ministry's notice on nirfindia.org.
| Event | Date | Note |
|---|---|---|
| NIRF 2023 results | June 2023 | Earlier release pattern |
| NIRF 2024 results | 12 August 2024 | Announced online |
| NIRF 2025 results (10th edition) | 4 September 2025 | 17 categories; SDG category added; announced at Bharat Mandapam |
| India Rankings 2026 data submission | 6 January to 16 March 2026 | Institutions upload data on the NIRF portal |
| NIRF 2026 results | Not announced | Expected in October 2026 by several portals; unconfirmed |
Search results are full of articles that claim to show the NIRF 2026 top 10 before any official release. Those are either predictions or the 2025 list with the year changed. Always cross-check with nirfindia.org. If a page does not show a Ministry release date, treat its numbers with suspicion.
What to expect when NIRF 2026 is released
Based on the 2025 results and the long run of the past decade, IIT Madras is the clear favourite to stay No. 1 overall, and IISc Bengaluru should lead the Universities and Research categories. The more interesting movement is lower down. In 2025 IIT Guwahati dropped out of the overall top 10 to 11th, BITS Pilani jumped from 23rd to 16th, and Homi Bhabha National Institute climbed from 27th to 20th. Because the 2025 cycle introduced negative marking for retracted research papers and third-party verification of submitted data, institutions with weaker research integrity or data discipline could see sharper swings. This is analysis, not a forecast of any specific rank.
Students applying for 2027 admissions should not wait for the 2026 list before shortlisting. Most counselling processes use entrance-exam cutoffs, and NIRF is only one input. Use the 2025 list as a working shortlist and refresh your notes when the new data appears.

What the overall table tells you
The first six places are unchanged from 2024, and IITs hold six of the top ten slots, with IISc Bengaluru the only non-IIT in the top six. AIIMS Delhi is the highest-ranked medical institution at No. 8, while Jawaharlal Nehru University and Banaras Hindu University complete the top ten. Delhi is the most represented city, with IIT Delhi, AIIMS Delhi, JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia and the University of Delhi all in the top fifteen.
Remember what the overall list is: a cross-discipline comparison. It rewards large, research-heavy, multidisciplinary institutions. A top-class management school or a specialised law university will not appear high on it simply because it does not offer enough disciplines, which is why NIRF also publishes subject-wise lists. If you want an MBA, read the Management table. If you want to study law, read the Law table. The overall rank is a useful reputation signal but a poor tool for choosing a course.
Top Engineering Colleges in India: NIRF Engineering Ranking
IIT Madras has now led the Engineering category for ten consecutive years. Scores below are the official 2025 engineering scores.
| Rank | Institution | City | State | Score | Details |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | IIT Madras | Chennai | Tamil Nadu | 88.72 | View → |
| #2 | IIT Delhi | New Delhi | Delhi | 85.74 | View → |
| #3 | IIT Bombay | Mumbai | Maharashtra | 83.65 | View → |

| #8 | IIT Guwahati | Guwahati | Assam | 72.24 | View → |
| #9 | NIT Trichy | Tiruchirappalli | Tamil Nadu | 68.14 | View → |
| #10 | IIT (BHU) Varanasi | Varanasi | Uttar Pradesh | 67.24 | – |
Reading the engineering list
The top eight places are all IITs, with IIT Hyderabad overtaking IIT Guwahati to take 7th in 2025 (72.31 against 72.24, a margin of just 0.07 marks). NIT Tiruchirappalli at 9th is the only NIT in the top ten, and IIT (BHU) Varanasi is 10th. The gap between 8th and 9th place is about four marks, which shows how far the IIT tier sits ahead of the next group of institutions.
For most students the real question is not who is No. 1 but which institution offers the best branch within reach of their rank. A student with a mid-range JEE Advanced rank often has a better career outcome choosing computer science at a newer IIT than a core branch at an older one, or a strong NIT over a weaker IIT branch, depending on goals. Rank tables cannot answer that, so use them to build a shortlist and then compare branch-level placement and research data on the NIRF data sheets.
Why choose a top-10 engineering college
- Strong peer and employer reputation, which helps in recruitment and higher-study applications
- Dense alumni networks and larger on-campus recruiter pools
- Better research labs, faculty depth and startup support
- Lower fees at government institutions compared with most private universities
Trade-offs to weigh
- Very high entrance cutoffs and tough competition for every seat
- Branch matters more than college name for many outcomes, and top branches fill first
- Heavy academic workload and limited flexibility to change branches
- Location, climate and distance from home can affect comfort and cost
Top MBA and Management Colleges in India: NIRF Management Ranking
IIM Ahmedabad retained the top position, followed by IIM Bangalore and IIM Kozhikode. Only the ranks we could verify against multiple reports are shown; see nirfindia.org for the complete top 100.

The wider top ten
Seven IIMs feature in the NIRF 2025 Management top ten, alongside XLRI Jamshedpur and IIT Delhi's Department of Management Studies. Other well-known names in the top group include IIM Calcutta, IIM Indore and IIM Mumbai. The ordering below the top three has shifted between recent editions, so rely on the official table for exact ranks.
NIRF's management score gives weight to graduation outcomes, which include placement and median salary, as well as perception among employers and academics. That makes it a useful starting point for MBA aspirants, but it does not replace programme-level research: compare the specific PGP or MBA batch size, specialisation options, international exchange, and the average and median compensation for the latest batch. Admission to the IIMs runs through CAT, while many other top B-schools also accept XAT, GMAT or CMAT scores.
Top Medical Colleges in India: NIRF Medical Ranking
| Rank | Institution | City | State | Details |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | AIIMS New Delhi | New Delhi | Delhi | View → |
| #2 | PGIMER Chandigarh | Chandigarh | Chandigarh | View → |
| #3 | Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore | Vellore | Tamil Nadu | View → |
AIIMS New Delhi has led the Medical category for years, with PGIMER Chandigarh and CMC Vellore consistently in the top three. MBBS admission to almost all of these institutions is through the national NEET UG process followed by MCC counselling, not through NIRF. CMC Vellore is a private minority institution with its own selection stages in addition to national eligibility, so read its current admission notice carefully. NIRF's medical score weighs clinical and teaching resources and graduation outcomes, so patient load, faculty strength and postgraduate pathways matter as much as the headline rank.
Top Law Colleges in India: NIRF Law Ranking
| Rank | Institution | City | Admission route |
|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | National Law School of India University (NLSIU) | Bengaluru | CLAT |
| #2 | National Law University (NLU) Delhi | New Delhi | AILET |
| #3 | NALSAR University of Law | Hyderabad | CLAT |
NLSIU, NLU Delhi and NALSAR have held the first three places in consecutive editions. Gujarat National Law University and WB National University of Juridical Sciences are also regularly in the top five. Law admissions are driven by entrance tests (the CLAT consortium for most NLUs and a separate test for NLU Delhi), so a strong NIRF rank must be matched with a realistic CLAT or AILET score. Check the latest notification for each university because exam patterns, seat matrices and fee structures change.
Top Pharmacy Colleges in India: NIRF Pharmacy Ranking
| Rank | Institution | City | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | Jamia Hamdard | New Delhi | Deemed university |
| #2 | BITS Pilani | Pilani | Deemed university |
| #3 | Panjab University | Chandigarh | State public university |
Jamia Hamdard retained first place in pharmacy, while BITS Pilani rose to second from third in 2024. JSS College of Pharmacy (Ooty and Mysuru) also features among the top performers. For pharmacy, check approvals from the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) in addition to the NIRF rank, and compare laboratory facilities, industry tie-ups and the proportion of graduates who proceed to M.Pharm or pharmaceutical jobs.
Top Universities and Undergraduate Colleges in India
| Rank | University | City | State |
|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | IISc Bangalore | Bengaluru | Karnataka |
| #2 | Jawaharlal Nehru University | New Delhi | Delhi |
| #3 | Manipal Academy of Higher Education | Manipal | Karnataka |
| #4 | Jamia Millia Islamia | New Delhi | Delhi |
| #5 | University of Delhi | New Delhi | Delhi |
| #6 | Banaras Hindu University | Varanasi | Uttar Pradesh |
IISc Bengaluru is the best university for the tenth time, and it also leads the Research Institutions category. JNU is second and Manipal Academy of Higher Education third, a high placing for a deemed university. Jamia Millia Islamia, the University of Delhi and BHU round out the first six. Among state public universities, Jadavpur University ranks first, ahead of Anna University and Panjab University.
| Rank | College | City |
|---|---|---|
| #1 | Hindu College | Delhi |
| #2 | Miranda House | Delhi |
| #3 | Hans Raj College | Delhi |
| #4 | Kirori Mal College | Delhi |
| #5 | St. Stephen's College | Delhi |
In the College category (colleges mainly offering undergraduate programmes), Hindu College was ranked first for the second year running, with Miranda House second. Delhi University colleges dominate: six of the top seven colleges nationwide are in Delhi. Admission to these colleges is mostly through CUET UG, so cutoffs and subject combinations are as important as the NIRF rank.

NIRF 2025 ranked institutions in 17 categories, adding the Sustainable Development Goals category for the first time to assess green practices and societal impact. Open Universities, Skill Universities and State Public Universities were introduced in 2024. If you are comparing distance or online options, the Open Universities list is the only government benchmark that evaluates them separately.
State-wise Snapshot: Where the NIRF 2025 Leaders Are

| Kerala | IIM Kozhikode (management 3), NIT Calicut (architecture) |
| Chandigarh and Punjab region | PGIMER Chandigarh (medical 2), Panjab University (state public 3; pharmacy 3) |
Tamil Nadu and Delhi have the deepest benches across categories, followed by Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. If you want to stay in your home state, use the state tables to see which institutions rank well in your region, then compare them with national options. Many central and state counselling systems give home-state preference, which can make a locally strong institution a better practical choice than a distant top-ranked one.
QS World University Rankings 2027: How Indian Institutions Ranked
QS 2027 was published in June 2026 and is the freshest global ranking that includes Indian institutions.
| India rank | Institution | QS 2027 world rank | Overall score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | IIT Delhi | 118 | 65.7 |
| 2 | IIT Bombay | 134 | 63.9 |
| 3 | IIT Madras | 170 | 59.3 |
| 4 | IIT Kharagpur | 205 | 55.1 |
| 5 (tie) | IISc Bengaluru | 221 | 53.8 |
| 5 (tie) | IIT Kanpur | 221 | 53.8 |
| 7 | University of Delhi | 322 | 43.8 |
| 8 | IIT Roorkee | 335 | 42.9 |
| 9 | IIT Guwahati | 349 | 41.9 |
Fifty-two Indian institutions appear in QS 2027, up from 11 in the 2015 edition and slightly down from 54 the previous year. IIT Delhi climbed five places to 118th, its highest position yet and the best ever for an Indian institution, while IIT Bombay slipped from 129th to 134th. Only three Indian institutions are in the global top 200. Thirteen Indian universities are in the global top 550, according to the Education Ministry. IIT Bombay's employer reputation rank of 32nd is the strongest Indian indicator.
IISc Bengaluru is No. 2 in NIRF overall but joint 5th among Indian institutions in QS, while IIT Delhi is first in QS but fourth in NIRF overall. The two systems use different data and weights. QS leans heavily on global reputation surveys, citations and international metrics; NIRF uses audited national data and rewards inclusivity and outcomes.
NIRF vs QS vs THE: Key Differences
| Feature | NIRF (India Rankings) | QS World University Rankings | Times Higher Education (THE) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run by | Ministry of Education / National Board of Accreditation | Quacquarelli Symonds (UK) | Times Higher Education (UK) |
| Coverage | Indian institutions only, across 17 categories | Global universities | Global universities |
| Peer or reputation weight | Perception: 10% | Academic reputation is the largest single indicator (about 30%) | Reputation survey: about 18% (teaching and research reputation combined) |
| Inclusivity | Counted explicitly (Outreach and Inclusivity: 10%) | Not a core indicator | Not a core indicator |
| Graduation outcomes | Counted (20%), including placement and median salary | Employer reputation (15%) and employment outcomes | Not a headline pillar |
| Best used for | Choosing a college within India | Study abroad, global brand comparison | Research-intensive comparison across countries |
| Latest edition in this page | NIRF 2025 (2026 not yet released) | QS 2027 (June 2026) | See THE for current edition |
For an Indian admission decision, NIRF is usually the more relevant of the three because it ranks the exact categories you apply to and uses audited Indian data. For higher studies or careers abroad, QS and THE carry more weight with international employers and admissions committees. The sensible approach is to use all three as complementary lenses, and to ignore any rank that cannot be traced back to a published methodology.
How NIRF Rankings Are Calculated
NIRF evaluates institutions on five broad parameters. The Ministry points out that the parameters and weighted averages differ between categories, so the percentages below are the headline weights used for the Overall category. Data is submitted by institutions, verified by the National Board of Accreditation, and since 2025 subject to third-party verification.
Teaching, Learning & Resources
Student strength, faculty-student ratio, faculty qualification and experience, financial resources and how well they are used.
Research & Professional Practice
Publications, citations, patents, sponsored research and consultancy, and the footprint of projects and professional practice.
Graduation Outcomes
Examination results, university examinations, median salary, higher-studies progression and PhD graduates.
Outreach & Inclusivity
Regional and gender diversity, economically and socially challenged students, and facilities for persons with disabilities.
Perception
Peer perception among academics and employer perception among corporates and professionals.
What changed in the 2025 methodology
NIRF 2025 introduced negative marking for retracted research papers and for their citations. The Chairman of the National Board of Accreditation described this as a double penalty. Third-party verification of institutional data was also carried out for the first time, which raises the reliability of submitted numbers. The framework added a Sustainable Development Goals category that measures green practices and societal impact. Together these changes reward integrity and quality, not only volume.
One practical consequence is that a rank can fall even when an institution has improved, if a larger pool of verified institutions improved faster or if previously unchecked data is corrected. When you see a big move, read the institution's own explanation and the NIRF data sheet before reaching any conclusion.
Strengths and Limits of NIRF Rankings
What NIRF does well
- Official, government-backed, and based on submitted and verified data
- Separate subject lists, so engineering, MBA, medical and law are not mixed
- Free public data sheets for every ranked institution
- Explicit credit for inclusivity, outreach and graduation outcomes
- Participation has grown to more than 7,000 institutions, giving wide coverage
Where NIRF falls short
- Relies on self-reported data, even with verification and penalties
- Single rank per institution hides big differences between branches and programmes
- Perception (10%) can favour older, better-known names
- Stakeholders, including some IIT directors and former vice-chancellors, have questioned the parameters and year-to-year fluctuations
- Does not tell you whether a college is right for your goals, budget or location
Used sensibly, NIRF is among the most transparent tools available to Indian students. Used blindly, it can push you toward a famous name with the wrong branch, or away from an excellent but lesser-known programme. The next section shows how to avoid both traps.
How to Choose a College Using NIRF Rankings
- Pick the right category. Use the Engineering, Management, Medical, Law or Pharmacy list for your course instead of the Overall list.
- Build a shortlist of 10 to 15. Include dream, realistic and safe options based on last year's entrance cutoffs, not on rank alone.
- Open the NIRF data sheet for each college. Look at intake, faculty numbers, median salary, higher-study progression and research output for your programme.
- Check accreditation and approvals. Confirm UGC, AICTE, NBA, NAAC, PCI or BCI recognition as relevant to your course.
- Compare total cost. Add tuition, hostel, mess, travel and any loan interest, then compare against the median salary of graduates.
- Evaluate the branch or specialisation. A strong branch at a slightly lower-ranked college can beat a weak one at a top-ranked institution.
- Talk to current students or alumni. Ask about teaching quality, internships, mental-health support and campus culture.
- Decide using fit. Rank breaks ties; it should not make the decision for you.
| Factor | IITs and top central institutions | NITs and state institutions | Private and deemed universities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical fees | Lower, with scholarships and fee waivers | Low to moderate | Moderate to high; large variation |
| Admission route | JEE Advanced, NEET UG, CAT, CLAT and similar national exams | JEE Main, state exams, national counselling | Own entrance tests (BITSAT, VITEEE and others) or board marks |
| Strength | Research, brand, alumni network | Value for money, strong regional recruiters | Flexibility, infrastructure, international tie-ups |
| Watch out for | Intense competition, fixed branch seats | Varying placement depth by branch | Check real placement data and fee increases |
Whatever you choose, apply early for financial support. Government, state and institutional scholarships can reduce the cost of a top-ranked college substantially. Browse our scholarships section and compare options on the compare colleges page.

JEE Main 2027 registration is expected shortly, according to education news portals, so keep an eye on the NTA announcements.
How to Check Any College's NIRF Rank and Data
- Go to nirfindia.org and open the Rankings section.
- Select the year (2025 is the latest published) and the category you need.
- Search for the institute by name, or open the ranked list and download the PDF.
- Open the institute's data sheet to see intake, faculty, placement and median salary, PhD graduates, research output and expenditure.
- Compare at least three institutions side by side, focusing on your programme, not only on the overall rank.
Pay attention to median salary and the share of students who go for higher studies. A high median salary with a small placement base can be misleading, and a lower salary with a very high placement percentage may indicate a healthier outcome for the average student. Look at several years of data to separate a one-off spike from a sustained trend.
Key Trends From NIRF 2025
- IIT dominance continues. IITs hold nine of the ten engineering spots and six of the top ten overall places.
- Non-IIT multidisciplinary universities are rising. JNU, BHU, Jamia Millia Islamia, Manipal and the University of Delhi are all in the overall top 15.
- Deemed and private universities are climbing. BITS Pilani jumped from 23rd to 16th and Homi Bhabha National Institute from 27th to 20th overall.
- Research integrity now affects scores. Retractions carry negative marking, which changes incentives for institutions.
- Participation keeps growing. Applications more than doubled from 6,272 in 2021 to 14,163 in 2025.
- Delhi colleges dominate undergraduate rankings. Six of the top seven colleges are in Delhi.

The Ministry notes that the exact weights differ between categories, and from 2025 NIRF applies negative marking for retracted research papers.
How many institutions take part in NIRF?
Applications grew from 6,272 in 2021 to 14,163 in 2025, and the number of participating institutions rose from 4,030 to 7,692 over the same period, according to figures shared by the government in the Lok Sabha. NIRF 2025 ranked institutions in 17 categories.
Is NIRF better than QS or THE rankings?
They answer different questions. NIRF compares Indian institutions on Indian data, including inclusivity and outcomes. QS and THE compare universities globally, with much heavier weight on reputation surveys and international metrics. In QS World University Rankings 2027, IIT Delhi is India's best at 118th globally. Use NIRF for domestic admission decisions and QS or THE when you are weighing study abroad or global brand value.
Should I choose a college only because of its NIRF rank?
No. A rank is a starting filter, not a decision. Check the branch or course, the entrance cutoff you can realistically reach, accreditation, fees, placement data for your branch, location and the faculty in your specialisation. A strong programme at a slightly lower-ranked college often beats a weak branch at a top-ranked one.
Which is the best state public university in NIRF 2025?
Jadavpur University, Kolkata ranks first among state public universities, ahead of Anna University, Chennai, and Panjab University, Chandigarh.
What is the best college in Delhi University under NIRF?
Hindu College leads the NIRF 2025 College category for the second year in a row, followed by Miranda House, Hans Raj College, Kirori Mal College and St. Stephen's College. Six of the top seven colleges nationally are in Delhi.
How do I check a college's NIRF rank and data?
Open nirfindia.org, choose the ranking year and category, and search for the institute. Each ranked institution has a data sheet showing intake, faculty numbers, placement and median salary, research output and expenditure. Compare the numbers for the specific programme you want, not just the headline rank.
