About NIT Rourkela – National Institute of Technology Rourkela
National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela), also known as NITRKL or NIT-R, is one of India's most prestigious centrally-funded engineering institutions. Established on 15 August 1961 as the Regional Engineering College (REC) Rourkela, the institute was elevated to National Institute of Technology status under the NIT Act 2007 and declared an Institute of National Importance | the same classification as IITs. The institute is located in the steel city of Rourkela, Odisha, and its sprawling 650-acre green campus was built on land donated by the then Chief Minister of Odisha, Biju Patnaik. The foundation stone was ceremoniously laid by India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
NIT Rourkela holds a distinguished position in national and international rankings. As of NIRF 2025, it is ranked #13 in Engineering, #30 in Research and #34 in Management | making it one of the most well-rounded technical institutes in India. The institute is one of the top 5 NITs in India by overall performance and has received the NAAC A++ accreditation, the highest grade awarded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
What makes NIT Rourkela particularly compelling is its unique academic diversity. Beyond the standard engineering disciplines, it offers some of India's rarest undergraduate programs | Ceramic Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Food Process Engineering and Industrial Design | programs that directly leverage Rourkela's identity as India's premier steel and minerals production hub, home to the iconic Rourkela Steel Plant (SAIL). This industry proximity creates unmatched internship pipelines and direct recruitment pathways in the metals, mining and materials sectors.
The institute's modernisation has been accelerated by two significant foreign collaborative funding arrangements | one in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering under an Indo-UK collaboration | that have helped build research infrastructure comparable to premier global universities. With active research centres in nanotechnology, robotics, renewable energy and biomedical engineering, NIT Rourkela is increasingly a destination for students who want to combine high-quality undergraduate education with meaningful research exposure.
